In war I learned through facing such uncomfortable thoughts as this: Will I have to destroy “X” person some day? Could I bring myself to do it? Will it ever come down to that?
One does not usually need to make that decision just right then. It is all useless, future-based anxiety. In the present moment, there need be no issue. So it is best to put it out of one’s mind and focus on one’s present task… no matter how many times one is distracted by the horrifying.
You don’t have to make that decision yet.
